Betty was born in Driebergen, in The Netherlands, and immigrated to Canada with her family at age eleven. At thirteen, after showing a keen interest in art she was given her first oil painting kit and began to create paintings for family and friends. After some artistic experimentation, and winning a high school art competition, Betty's paintbrush laid still for some years. It was not until 1984 that Betty began to seriously pursue her interest in art. While oil is her favorite media, she has been experimenting with acrylics, water colour and mixed media. Basically a self-taught artist with a preference for detail, Betty proceeded with lessons in an effort to loosen her style. Since that time she has participated in many workshops and taken occasional courses. Searching for subjects, photography and travel have become natural complements to her artistic interests. Betty has participated in many juried, non-juried and solo art shows. She has displayed in galleries in York Region and Metro Toronto. Her works are also displayed in private and corporate collections throughout Canada, the United States and The Netherlands. Betty has done numerous commissioned paintings, but prefers the creativity that independent work allows. Betty and her husband Edward live on the outskirts of Holland Landing, Ontario, where the resident deer, rabbits, coyotes and birds provide daily inspiration. |
